Beethoven Violin Concerto
Shostakovich Symphony No 10

Los Angeles-based conductor Andrew Shulman returns to St George’s to direct this double-bill.

Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony, considered by many to be his greatest work, is a monumental creation containing some of the composer’s most personal utterances juxtaposed with some of his most brutal and ironic musical statements. Autobiographical in nature, occasionally light-hearted, more often troubled and inconsolably sad, the symphony ends in a radiant affirmation of life.

Beethoven’s violin concerto, its solo part so rooted in the symphonic discourse of the whole ensemble, is a lyric delight, for which bhco welcomes back long-term collaborator, Thomas Bowes.
