  • Barbican Centre Silk Street London, EC2Y 8DS United Kingdom (map)

EFG London Jazz Festival, presented by Barbican Associate Producer Serious, features another great line-up of artists performing at the Barbican and neighbouring venues. This year includes Wordless! on 11 November, an ‘intellectual vaudeville show’, with celebrated cartoonist Art Spiegelman putting on an innovative hybrid of slides, talk, and musical performance created in collaboration with acclaimed jazz composer Phillip Johnston (Barbican Hall, 7:30pm).

Vocalist and samba queen Elza Soares performs an evening of edgy Brazilian music on 13 November (Barbican Hall, 7.30pm), and will be joined on stage by special guest artist, Mercury-nominated singer-songwriter Eska and her band. On 16 November LA-based composer, arranger, producer and instrumentalist, the multi-talented Miguel Atwood-Ferguson is joined by co-producer Carlos Niño and a 17-piece ensemble to pay tribute to the late American record producer and rapper J Dilla, with Suite for Ma Dukes. (Barbican Hall, 7:30pm)

Returning to the classic Stax label after some five decades, a resurgent William Bell is the soul story of 2016, making a massive impact with his acclaimed new album, This is Where I Live, which will feature in his Jazz Festival performance on 18 November (Barbican Hall, 7:30pm).

Other Festival highlights include pianist Tord Gustavsen in a song project with singer Simin Tander and drummer Jarle Vepestad; saxophonist Joshua Redman and pianist Brad Mehldau who are making their debut as a duo in the UK; Norwegian composer and saxophonist Marius Neset leading an orchestral performance – featuring London Sinfonietta – of music from his forthcoming album; a double bill of musical innovators featuring vocalist and instrumentalist Dhafer Youssef and trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire, and the Wayne Shorter Quartet reviving music from Shorter’s 50 year career.
