The mystery surrounding the Havering Hoard has been kept under wraps for longer than intended but now the Museum of London Docklands can confirm that London’s largest ever Bronze Age hoard will go on display to the public for the very first time from 11 September.

As part of the museum’s new major exhibition, Havering Hoard: A Bronze Age Mystery, visitors will have the chance to dig deep and unearth the intriguing mystery of 453 bronze objects, dating between c.900 and c.800 BC.

Consisting of weapons, tools and other unusual objects rarely found in the UK, this internationally significant find was uncovered during a planned archaeological investigation in Havering towards the end of 2018. Its deliberate placement and close proximity to the Thames raises a number of questions around who buried the hoard, for what reason and why it was never recovered.

With all 453 objects on display alongside objects from the museum’s collection, the exhibition will explore these questions and paint a picture of life during the Late Bronze Age when the land where London now exists was a very different place.
