LONDON, March 2019 – Coal Drops Yard, the King’s Cross shopping and restaurant district, invites the public to join them over London Craft Week (8 – 12 May) for a programme of workshops, installations and experiences to celebrate the makers and crafters of London’s newest creative neighbourhood. Located within the reimagined historic buildings and arches of Coal Drops Yard, welcome to a wonderful week of new fashioned crafts.
To celebrate London Craft Week Coal Drops Yard has invited BUAISOU a Japanese artist collective of farmers and dyers to produce an installation of indigo flags, hand dyed using traditional Japanese techniques which will also be displayed during a series of installations and workshops around the process.
Located in Tokushuma Prefecture – on the eastern end of Japan’s Shikoku Island – BUAISOU does everything from indigo cultivation and creating dye to designing and making garments. Known to be one of the most difficult dyes to produce the indigo dye of BUAISOU uses a traditional Japanese technique “Jigoku date” (meaning: making hell) by mixing wood lye, bran and shell-ash, followed by a fermentation process. Alongside the installation the BUAISOU team will be in Coal Drops Yard to host a series of immersive indigo dyeing workshops in KIOSK N1C, which is also the first UK stockist of BUAISOU’s clothing and homeware range.
STORE store in Coal Drops Yard will host a series of public dyeing workshops, run by some of the most exciting designers working in the UK. They include science-inspired Unit Lab, who will teach participants the art of ‘Electro Colour’ – printing with electricity.
A community of over 50 established and emerging brands, the Heatherwick Studio designed Coal Drops Yard is home to outstanding architecture, design-led retailers, new public spaces and a vibrant cultural scene.
