iVisit.... 'IF I CAN' @ National Trust's Red House

A dark, gothic antidote to the candlelit Yuletide backdrop

Experience an immersive new sound play from Palimpsest this winter at the National Trust’s Red House.

Encounter themes of loss and longing in the 1860s as the sensory drama is presented twice each night through audio and live actors. A range of tales will be explored as you roam freely throughout the arts and crafts enclave, complete with drink in hand.

Atmospheric, ghostly and unspeakably sad, ‘If I Can’ is a narrative poem, fusing the extant shards of poetry and prose of those Pre-Raphaelites that built and embellished Red House.

With Red House populated by Palimpsest actors in character costumes, you will choose whom to follow as their lives spool out; as if the very walls could speak and give up their secrets.
“This is a unique and exciting new way to experience the stories of one of the most influential groups of artists and the house they created together.” Robynn Finney, House & gardens Manager, Red House
‘If I Can’ is written by Katherine Tozer for Palimpsest, with music and sound by John Chambers.

iVisit.... Nightwatchers @ Tower of London

After two sold out runs NIGHTWATCHERS will return to the Tower of London November 2016.

After-hours this place is off limits to most people, but not to us Operative 341. This will be your patch. The people here, your business

NIGHTWATCHERS is an after-hours immersive experience at the Tower of London, directed by award-winning digital theatre company ANAGRAM.

Step into a shadowy world of state surveillance, where messages and phone calls lead you around one of our most notorious prisons; this is your induction into the art of covert investigation. The story dips between contemporary London and the most dramatic years of the Elizabethan secret service.

While faith, violence and the invisible lines between truth and justice collide, you must find your way, guided by the stories of code-breakers, law enforcers and radical religious extremists.

In a climate of global insecurity, who watches the watchers?

iVisit.... Amadeus @ National Theatre

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a rowdy young prodigy who arrives in Vienna determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, Court Composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy it. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music and, ultimately, with God.

Directed by Michael Longhurst (The World of Extreme Happiness at the NT and Constellations), this acclaimed play had its premiere at the NT in 1979, winning multiple Olivier and Tony Awards before being adapted into an Academy Award-winning film. In this new production, Lucian Msamati (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) plays Salieri, Adam Gillen Mozart, and Karla Crome Constanze, with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia. Designed by Chloe Lamford, with music direction and additional music by Simon Slater, choreography by Imogen Knight, lighting by Jon Clark and sound by Paul Arditti, the cast also includes Sarah Amankwah, Hammed Animashaun, Geoffrey Beevers, Fleur de Bray, Tom Edden, Matthew Hargreaves, Andrew Macbean, Alexandra Mathie, Eamonn Mulhall, Robyn Allegra Parton, Hugh Sachs, Eleanor Sutton, Wendy Dawn Thompson, Peter Willcock.

Amadeus runs from 19 October until 26 January with additional performances to be announced and is supported by Travelex with hundreds of seats at £15 for every show.  The production is supported by the Amadeus production syndicate in association with Southbank Sinfonia.

iVisit.... RHS Chelsea Flower Show

  • RHS Chelsea Flower Show (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Chelsea Flower Show has been held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, London every year since 1913, apart from gaps during the two World Wars. Once Britain's largest flower show (it has now been overtaken by RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show), it is still the most prestigious.

Key facts

  • The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society which was founded in 1804.
  • In 1927 there was a campaign to get the RHS to ban foreign exhibits from RHS Chelsea to reduce competition with British firms. The RHS refused saying, ‘horticulture knows nothing of nationality.’
  • In 1932 the rain at the Show was so severe that a summer house display fell to pieces. One very wet year an exhibitor named it ‘The Chelsea Shower Flow’.
  • The Great Pavilion is roughly 11,775 square metres or 2.90 acres, enough room to park 500 London buses.
  • Of the firms that exhibited at the first Show in 1913, three can still be seen at the Show today: McBean’s Orchids, Blackmore & Langdon and Kelways Plants.
  • A cap of 157,000 was placed on the number of visitors to the showground in 1988.
