Islington Square Opens Doors to Inaugural Summer Terrace
One of London’s best-kept secrets, Islington Square is a new indoor and outdoor space flanked by spectacular Edwardian architecture.
The square’s central open-air boulevard has been transformed into a terrace for the summer, complete with holiday-inspired deck chairs, planters and a new fresh food market
Housed within the former North London Royal Mail Sorting and Delivery Centre, Islington Square is a new multi-faceted destination and heritage site spanning shops, residences, offices, an upscale Odeon cinema, a Third Space gym and more – all spaciously distributed across three newly formed ‘streets’ conceived by award-winning architect Piers Gough of CZWG.
Timed with a recent post-lockdown reopening, Islington Square has launched the ‘Summer Terrace’, an urban retreat offering respite in the heart of North London. Combining seasonal planting selected by local resident and keen gardener Naomi Schillinger, deck chairs in Islington Square’s signature green, a new food market and socially-distanced events, the terrace offers a holiday-inspired environment for the surrounding community and for Londoners looking for a new spot to discover this summer.
Occupying the square’s central boulevard, the Summer Terrace will stage a new food and craft market, ‘Boulevard Market’, running from end of August to mid-October 2020. Launched in collaboration with Real Food Festival, the weekly market will include up to 20 independent traders selling artisan produce, handmade accessories, craft beers, organic wines and classic summer cocktails, as well as cooked food to enjoy on the terrace. Islington’s new Boulevard Market stalls will feature a contemporary and uniform design, combining calming tones in harmony with its architectural surroundings.
Inspired by quintessential summer English traditions with Mediterranean-inspired al fresco living, the Summer Terrace will run in parallel with open-air events from 7th August, including the Summer Solstice Yoga Series, a trio of yoga events hosted by independent practitioners; Picnics with Megan’s; and the Little Angel Theatre Festival, a pop-up outdoor puppet theatre for little ones.
