iVisit.... The Lamb & Flag

The Lamb & Flag is a historic pub in vibrant Covent Garden and was a favourite watering hole of Charles Dickens. Retaining its old-world charm, the pub serves great food, excellent real ale and features in practically every London guide book ever written.Great London pubs don’t get more historic than this. The very first mention of a pub on this site is in 1772, when it was known as The Coopers Arms (the name changed to The Lamb & Flag in 1833).

The pub acquired a reputation in the early nineteenth century for staging bare-knuckle prize fights earning it the nickname ‘The Bucket of Blood,’ and the alleyway beside the pub was the scene of an attack on the poet John Dryden in 1679 by thugs hired by John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, with whom he had a long-standing conflict.

Food menu is created from fresh, local produce and features authentic, traditional English pub cooking. With a popular Sunday roast and a  wide range of excellent cask ales and real beers, including seasonal guest ales. Don’t miss Jazz night on every 1st Sunday of each month starting at 8pm, it’s been running at the Lamb and Flag since 1993.

iVisit.... Brixton Market

Brixton Station Road Market is run by the Brixton Market Traders’ Federation Community Interest Company. That means it’s run by traders themselves. It isn’t owned by a private corporation or run by the local authority, which makes it one-of-a-kind.

It’s great for a lunchtime snack on a Sunday. And of course it’s full of useful groceries,  including fresh fruit and veg straight from the soil, and cheeses, flowers, meat, poultry, artisan bread, cakes, and jams.

The community and local people are at the heart of the market. And now that the Federations is a registered community interest company, any profit made goes back into Brixton, in one way or another.

iVisit.... Simpsons Tavern

In 1723 Thomas Simpson opened his first Fish Ordinary Restaurant in Bell Alley, Billingsgate. His clientele was mainly those who worked in the fish market who bought him fish which he would prepare specially. After the demolition of Bell Alley he resumed work purchasing the Queen's Arms, Bird in Hand Court, Cheapside.

Traditions and customs were strictly maintained at mealtimes by the Chairman who would preside over each meal. It was they who, for instance, would ensure that lunch would start promptly at one, introduce notable guests and measure the cheese. Many of them were noted for their longevity of life.

Thomas Simpson founded the present site of Simpson's in 1757 which was a gift to him from his father. It is situated opposite The Jamaica Wine House where Pasque Rosee in the mid seventeenth century founded the first London Coffee House.

It was not until 1916 that ladies were admitted and even well into the 20th century 2/- would buy 'The Original Fish Dinner' at one o'clock. Although 2/- will not buy what it did in the 1750's, you can still enjoy everything Simpson's has been noted for over the past 250 years.
